Additional learning support
At Goulburn North Public School , we make sure every student is prepared and supported to learn. We provide assistance to students with disabilities and additional learning needs, enabling them to fully participate in all aspects of school life. Your child doesn’t need a formal diagnosis to receive support within a mainstream classroom, and help can start at any point during their schooling.
NSW public schools are well prepared to support students with disability and additional learning and support needs and staff are ready to answer your questions.
Visit our Inclusive learning support hub for more information on:
- children starting school with additional needs
- support and adjustments available
- personalised learning and development.
Support that fits your child's needs
Some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work closely with families to make support plans and adjustments that suits each child’s needs.
Additional learning support can include:
- teachers and support staff working together with families (and students, if needed)
- specialist support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
- providing tailored programs to help high potential and gifted students with their advanced learning needs
-
small group tutoring to provide targeted literacy and numeracy support for students
-
regular check-ins to review and update the planned supports
-
changes to the classrooms:
- accessible classrooms
- assistive technology
- instructional resources
-
extra guidance, simpler content or different focus during lessons
-
assessment adjustments:
- more time
- simpler language
- breaks during tasks
- different ways to complete a task (e.g. oral presentations instead of written tasks).
We know when a student needs help when:
- teachers notice changes in learning or behaviour
- reviewing assessment results and learning progress
- parents and carers raise concerns or ask for support.
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed. If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.
Northern Lights Program
Goulburn North Public School proudly offers two specialised supported learning classes alongside the comprehensive Northern Lights supported learning program.
The Northern Lights program is tailored to meet the individual needs of each student, with personalised learning plans centred around their unique interests, strengths, and hobbies. This approach ensures students remain engaged and motivated throughout their learning journey.
Our program includes a variety of dynamic, hands-on activities designed to develop essential skills and confidence, such as:
- Coding and Robotics: Hands-on technology lessons that introduce students to the fundamentals of programming and robot operation, encouraging problem-solving and creativity.
- Cooking Programs: Practical cooking sessions where students learn everyday skills, including meal preparation, nutrition, and kitchen safety, promoting independence.
- Travel Training: Weekly outings to local venues provide real-world experience in navigating community spaces safely and confidently, supporting students’ independence and social skills.
- Gross Motor Programs: Activities focused on developing physical strength, coordination, and energy management, helping students to stay active and engaged.
Through Northern Lights, our school is committed to nurturing each student’s growth and providing supportive, meaningful learning experiences that empower them to thrive both at school and beyond.
